Niet Zweden of Finland is de innovatietopper van de wereld, maar IJsland. Tenminste, dat staat in het meer dan 200 bladzijden tellende onderzoek van INSEAD Business School en de Confederation of Indian Industry. Het is de derde keer dat INSEAD het jaarlijkse onderzoek uitvoert en een Global Innovation Index (GII) opmaakt.
Volgens de onderzoekers dankt IJsland zijn eerste plaats aan de goede infrastructuur, ICT voorzieningen en investeringen in Human Capacity. Zo scoorde het land hoog op innovatiepotentieel en investeringen in het onderwijs. De doorslag voor de nummer één positie was niet alleen de hoge score op Human Capacity, maar ook op welzijn, wetenschappelijke output en creatieve output.
In de ranglijst wordt IJsland op de voet gevolgd door Zweden (2) en Hong Kong (3). Finland staat op een bescheiden zesde plek, net voor Nederland (8). Giganten Amerika en China staan respectievelijk op plek 11 en 41. Opvallend is dat de de top 10 gedomineerd wordt door relatief kleine landen.
De onderzoekers baseerden de index op klassieke parameters zoals het aantal patenten per inwoner, wetenschappelijke publicaties en R&D uitgaven, maar ook op vernieuwende parameters zoals innovaties in opkomende markten en het effect van innovaties op de sociale welvaart. Het leuke aan het onderzoek is dat ze zich niet hebben beperkt tot een data-analyse, maar daarnaast een viertal landen hebben onderzocht in (korte) casestudy’s:
- Brazilië: het creëren van een macro-omgeving voor innovatie
- Denemarken: een nieuw innovatiemodel
- Singapore: de macht van de overheid
- USA: Amerikaanse innovatie in een wereld na crisis
